Wout Weghorst was the hero for the Netherlands on Sunday: the TSG Hoffenheim striker scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute to fire the Dutch to a 2-1 victory over Poland. Weghorst had only come on as a substitute two minutes earlier (81st) – and became the match winner with his first touch of the ball. The 31-year-old scored the all-important goal with a typical striker’s finish on his left foot.
E.M. – That sounds like a family that was generally more interested in art and culture than football.
On Monday, 17th June 2024, Peter Niemeyer took over as SV Werder Bremen’s new head of professional football. The 40-year-old, who has succeeded SVW’s new managing director for sport Clemens Fritz in the role, most recently secured promotion to the second division as managing director for sport at Preußen Münster, but is now ready for his next chapter with the Green-Whites.
“If a striker and a midfielder are signed, then Tel and Gravenberch have to be loaned out,” Matthäus told Tz’s Philipp Kessler (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Tel is highly talented. He was signed because he has high quality and half of Europe was chasing him. Bayern deserve to be celebrated for this transfer. However, he has not yet had the chance that such a young player would have wished for. The fact is that he has already scored four goals in just 360 Bundesliga minutes and has always performed well. We should not forget that (Erling) Haaland also started at a young age.”
The Swiss made a quick start in front of 43,000 expectant fans, and went in front on 12 minutes as Kwadwo Duah finished coolly past Peter Gulacsi. Vargas came close to doubling his side’s lead shortly afterwards, but on that occasion Gulacsi stood tall to prevent the Magyars falling two behind. Nevertheless, Switzerland did eventually break through again, with Michel Aebischer doubling their advantage on the stroke of half-time.
Instead, Bayern Munich is looking for a few “mentality monsters” to bolster the ranks of a squad that the executives feel might not be as…focused and assertive as needed:
FC Bayern München: Neuer – Kimmich (70. Mazraoui), Minjae (59. Upamecano), Dier, Davies – Pavlovic, Goretzka (70. Laimer), Tel, Müller (83. Zvonarek), Choupo-Moting (70. Zaragoza) – Kane
Müller, of course, has been relegated to the bench by the new coach and, oh by the way, was the subject of his own feature from Bild, which we covered here.
SFC Stern 1900: Härtel – Ibrisevic (83. Schneider), Steinmeyer, Cibusch, Fröhlich (80. Boldt), Schmitz – Brünner (70. Schreyer), Roll (70. Krüger, Gabler, Herber – Zeinert (80. Pricelius)
But for Mathys Tel, who arrived on a big fee from Rennes in last summer’s transfer window at only 17 years of age, it’s a challenge he’s embracing. Through his management, he released a statement about his future after an inaugural season in which he has found playing time hard to come by:
