Mikel Arteta believes Joao Cancelo would ‘slot in nicely’ at Arsenal, who look set to battle Bayern Munich and Barcelona for the Manchester City full-back this summer.
Cancelo left City in a shock loan move to Bayern in January having fallen out with Pep Guardiola, and he’s ‘unlikely to be reintegrated next season’, according to 90min.
The Portugal international was booed as he came off the bench in Bayern’s Champions League quarter-final at the Etihad and City will be listening to offers for the 28-year-old this summer.
Bayern hold a €70m option to buy Cancelo once his loan expires this summer but have told City that price is too steep.
They remain interested though, with Cancelo playing a more significant role at the club since Thomas Tuchel took over from Julian Nagelsmann.
and would be interested if they could sign him on loan initially with an option or obligation to buy in future.
Real Madrid are also in the market for a right-back as they look to replace veteran Dani Carvajal, and 90min claim Cancelo’s camp have been sounding out the La Liga giants over a possible move to the Bernabeu.
Arsenal are also in the hunt, with Mikel Arteta thought to be a big admirer having spent time with the versatile full-back as assistant to Guardiola at City.
The report claims Arteta ‘believes that he could slot nicely into the Gunners’ current tactical setup’, which makes sense given his ability to drift into midfield as Oleksandr Zinchenko has done since he made the move from the Etihad to the Emirates.
Cancelo’s ability to play on both the left and the right would also presumably be seen as a huge bonus for Arsenal as they look to mount another title challenge next season.
But City are likely now more wary of selling to Arsenal as a result of the impact Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus have had on the Gunners this season.
