Tottenham are not expected to have any competition for Daniel Levy’s ‘top managerial target’ Julian Nagelsmann, according to the Daily Mail.

After working as Hoffenheim under-17s and u19s manager, Nagelsmann took charge of their first team in 2016, when he was only 28 years old, becoming the youngest head coach in Bundesliga history.

He then joined RB Leipzig – where he was incredibly successful – before a move to the biggest club in Germany, Bayern Munich, ahead of the 2021/22 season.

The 36-year-old only took charge of 84 matches for Bayern having been relieved of his duties on March 24.

Nagelsmann has been strongly linked with Tottenham ever since he left his role in Munich, following the sacking of Antonio Conte.

The German had initially emerged as one of Chelsea’s top targets after Graham Potter was sacked, but he pulled out of the race, giving ex-Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino a free run at the job.

Bayern technically did not sack Nagelsmann, instead putting him on gardening leave, meaning a club would have to pay a compensation fee – believed to be around £10million – should they wish to appoint him before the end of the 22/23 campaign.

It is unclear what the terms will be when the season comes to an end, but it does seem likely that he will join a new club in the near future.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would be an excellent landing spot from the club’s point of view with the Ryan Mason’s side set to miss out on Champions League football and could be set to lose Harry Kane this summer.

Despite Kane’s uncertain future and the lack of Champions League football, Nagelsmann appears to be keen to take on the job.

with the 36-year-old said to be reluctant to join over his salary demands and the fact the club has no director of football in place.

However, the Daily Mail have provided a positive report.

Nagelsmann ‘is waiting to see who is appointed sporting director’ and ‘wants assurances over the level of control’ he will have in the transfer market before he ‘considers any formal approach’.

The report adds:

‘The emergence of Johannes Spors as contender for the vacant sporting directorship is particular intriguing because the administrator has a prior relationship with Naglesmann from the Bundesliga circuit. Brentford technical director Lee Dykes is also among the candidates.

‘Spurs are insisting there is not a No 1 candidate, but it is clear Naglesmann is major contender for the job.

‘And Mail Sport has learned that there is a confidence at Tottenham that they are unlikely to face competition from rival clubs for Nagelsmann if he is installed as their preferred candidate.’

It is noted that the Spurs job is expected to be the best available job in England with Chelsea set to appoint Pochettino.

Meanwhile, Nagelsmann is likely to be an ‘outside contender’ for the Real Madrid job should Carlo Ancelotti leave.

The appointment of a sporting director should play a huge part in Spurs’ bid to bring in Nagelsmann, though the Premier League club are expected to be in a ‘strong position’ unless an elite job ‘unexpectedly’ becomes available.

Other managers being targeted by Levy are Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso and Feyenoord’s Arne Slot.
