Liverpool should sign Ruben Neves for half the amount it would cost to sign Moises Caicedo or Declan Rice this summer, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

The Reds are looking to bring in at least a couple of midfielders this summer after allowing James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita to leave the club.

Jurgen Klopp has seemingly made Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister his top target this summer .

But they will not stop there with a number of other midfielders linked to Liverpool over the summer, including Mac Allister’s team-mate Caicedo and West Ham’s Rice.

But former Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor thinks Neves would be a more affordable option for Liverpool despite Barcelona also showing interest in the Portugal international.

“He wants to play at a top club, and he’s said he wants to play in the Champions League,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider.

“Liverpool aren’t in that competition, but they’re a big club, a big draw – and I’m sure they can attract top players like him.

“I just can’t see him staying at Wolves. If you’re a starter for Portugal, you should be at a better club than Wolves.

“That’s no disrespect, but he’s better than them.”

Agbonlahor added: “Liverpool need midfielders, but they can’t quite afford [Moises]Caicedo or [Declan]Rice.

“But Neves, you could get him for half the price of those two – I’m sure.”

Liverpool won’t be in the Champions League next season after finishing fifth in the Premier League and that could harm their chances of taking Neves to Anfield with the midfielder admitting it’s one of his “main goals” to play in the competition.

“I want to be here but I never hide that I want to play Champions League football. It’s a hard decision. Me and my family love it here, but in football you have to go for your main goals,” Neves told reporters after in their penultimate match of the season.

“Nothing’s happened yet. If it was my last game here I really enjoyed it and I’m very thankful for the last six seasons.”

Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui also spoke about Neves, he added: “I’m very happy with Ruben because he is our player. He’s had a very good season. He has a contract. We’re very happy he has a contract with us.”
