Callum Wilson has opened up on his World Cup dream as the Newcastle forward has found his form at the right point of the season.

Wilson was on target against Spurs this weekend and helped Newcastle claim a 2-1 away victory. The win for Eddie Howe’s side sees them go into the top four, having played one game more than Chelsea and Man United.

Newcastle have been a strong outfit so far this season and Wilson has had a solid campaign himself.

The 30-year-old has missed a handful of matches this season through injury, but he has delivered the goods when he has been available.

The forward has spoken on his World Cup chances after Newcastle’s recent victory.

He told Sky Sports: “Of course (I’m looking at the World Cup).

“For me, I’m just focussing on my performances. Game in game out, little by little, trying to add goals but also all-round performance I think I’m trying to improve.

“Hopefully, it catches the eye of the England manager — that’s my dream to play at a World Cup.

“I remember years ago I was in Qatar, doing rehab from an ACL injury, and they were building stadiums out there. I did say I’ll come back, I’ve got one eye on that.”

In eight starts this season Wilson has scored four goals and also provided one assist.

Since joining Newcastle in 2020, Wilson’s fitness record has often been called into question, but he has always delivered on the pitch.

Across 54 appearances for Newcastle, he has scored 24 goals which is an impressive return.

After Newcastle’s victory, Howe was also on hand to stake a claim for Wilson’s spot in the England team.

“I think Gareth does as well. He loves the player.

“Callum is an outstanding goalscorer, also an outstanding team-mate so if he was to go to a major tournament, he would support the players that are playing and wait for his opportunity to play.

“For me he has the complete package but that is Gareth’s decision and whatever decision he makes will be the right one.”

Newcastle have three Premier League games remaining before the break in play for the World Cup.
