Roy Keane has slammed the Manchester United players for patting David de Gea on the back after he won the Golden Glove award, insisting he would “move him on quickly”.

The United players were shown congratulating the Spanish goalkeeper, who saved a penalty in the final day victory over Fulham before collecting the award given to the stopper with the most clean sheets in a season.

Keane was predictably grumpy about the images, claiming Man Utd need to sign a better goalkeeper if they’re “going to get back winning trophies”.

“Manchester United had to improve defensively from last year because they were so bad,” former United captain Keane said in the Sky Sports studio.

“They’re all patting De Gea on the back there… I’d move him on quickly. He wouldn’t be for me, he’s not going to get Manchester United back winning trophies, absolutely not. The idea that the players are patting him on the back is ridiculous.”

Micah Richards then asked if Keane would keep him, to which the United legend said “you wouldn’t keep him as a number two, would you? He wouldn’t want to be number two having been number one at Untied for ten years.”

Richards then claimed De Gea “has done well for United in the past” having “won Player of the Year like four times in a row” before being shot down by Keane.

“What big deal is that? It’s about what the team is achieving. I think he’s made far too many mistakes over the last few years.

“He tried to leave the club a few years ago – he tried to go to Real Madrid.”

Richards then said “in a team that’s struggling he did alright”, before Keane came out with one of his classic lines to the amusement of Richards and Jamie Carragher.

“That’s his job!” Keane said.

United have been linked with a number of new goalkeepers despite De Gea reportedly nearing an agreement over an extension to his contract.

The goalkeeper is ‘protected’ by a £65m release clause and it’s claimed that Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in him.
