Chris Sutton has described Man Utd midfielder Bruno Fernandes as “shameful, embarrassing, disgraceful” as he urges Erik ten Hag to punish him for his unprofessional behaviour against Liverpool.

as Fernandes – who was captain against Jurgen Klopp’s men – were torn apart in the second half.

Cody Gakpo put Liverpool 1-0 up at half-time in a fairly even first half before another goal from Gakpo after the break, a brace each for Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez, .

Fernandes frustrated many fans watching the game, , with the Portugal international getting himself involved in a number of incidents.

And Sutton thinks Fernandes produced one of the worst displays he has seen from a Premier League player in the defeat to Liverpool.

Sutton wrote in the Daily Mail: “Bruno Fernandes shoved the referee’s assistant. He acted as if his nose had exploded when caught in the chest by Ibrahima Konate. He dived to try to win a penalty from Alisson. He refused to track Stefan Bajcetic when beaten. He waved his arms in the air when Erik ten Hag did not substitute him.

“This was shameful, embarrassing, disgraceful, whatever word you can conjure up. It is bad enough you are getting obliterated at Liverpool, but then you see the guy wearing the armband having a go at Ten Hag for not substituting him. Is he really the leader that everybody else is supposed to follow?

“Whatever you think of Harry Maguire, the club captain, you would not catch him behaving like this on the pitch. Ten Hag dealt with the Cristiano Ronaldo problem.

“Now he needs to deal with Fernandes, starting with deciding whether he deserves to wear the armband in Thursday’s Europa League clash with Real Betis. I don’t think he does. Liverpool were fantastic and United were foul, and nobody embodied their deplorable display more than Fernandes.”

Former Man City defender Micah Richards has tipped Man Utd to “bounce back” despite their “humiliation” against Liverpool.

Richards said on BBC Match of the Day 2: “I was in disbelief, shocked and stunned.

“There was no communication between Diogo Dalot and Antony. At times it was like Man Utd were playing with 10 men because Antony wasn’t doing his work. We are talking about the biggest game for Man Utd. I think it was him not helping out his team-mates.

“This is where you see character but you had Bruno Fernandes constantly waving his arms in the air. I think it’s a blip for Man Utd, they will bounce back, But it was humiliation at times today.”
