Chelsea are demanding ‘at least €80million’ for Mason Mount, meaning a move to Manchester United ‘is not imminent’, says Fabrizio Romano.
Mount is expected to leave in the summer with his Blues contract set to run out at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.
The England midfielder has been linked with Liverpool, Arsenal, and United in recent months, with Erik ten Hag’s side reportedly the frontrunners for his signature.
Rumours of a move to Old Trafford have accelerated over the last week or so. It was reported by The Telegraph on Wednesday evening that .
Mount has reportedly turned down several offers to extend his Chelsea contract due to the club’s reluctance to meet his wage demands.
While everything has been going pretty smoothly between United and the player, the huge stumbling block appears to be the Blues’ asking price.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side are desperate to offload several first-team players so cannot really afford to be stingy, but they are being just that, even with Mount’s contract a year from expiring.
Fabrizio Romano tweeted on Thursday afternoon that United are ‘working on a deal’ to sign Mount, and the Italian journalist later provided another update on the situation.
He has basically gone a little bit more in-depth, this time saying how much he believes Chelsea want for their academy graduate.
Romano claims Mount is ‘keen on joining’ the Red Devils with ‘no issues on personal terms’.
However, ‘the big gap between clubs’ in terms of their valuation of the player means a ‘deal is not imminent, at this stage’.
Chelsea are apparently asking for ‘at least €80m’ (£68.5m), which is fairly steep given his contract situation, as touched on beforehand.
Jacobs adds that new Blues boss Pochettino ‘does want to keep Mount’, though there is a ‘high probability’ he will leave in the summer.
Although Mount is expected to be one of many players Chelsea cash in on this summer, it would not be too surprising to see him remain at Stamford Bridge, in my opinion, anyway.
Sky Sports correspondent Dharmesh Sheth provided an update on both clubs, claiming that Mount is one of several midfield players United are looking at.
“Manchester United are expected to formally make an approach to Chelsea about signing Mason Mount,” he said. “Internal discussions are still ongoing behind the scenes at Manchester United about a potential offer to Chelsea.
“Mason Mount is one of a number of midfielders Manchester United are looking at. Aside from the No. 9, central midfield is a priority target.
“If a deal can be struck between Manchester United and Chelsea, it is thought that personal terms are not expected to be a problem.
“There have been talks over a new contract, but so far, no resolution. You can’t rule out Mason Mount staying under Mauricio Pochettino, but the noises that are gathering now is that he is leaning towards Manchester United.”
Sheth continued: “. As yet, no formal offer.”
It is added that Ruben Loftus-Cheek is in talks with AC Milan, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang “has got a lot of interest in Europe and further afield”.

Actually, Manchester United DO have reasons to be cheerful and one of them is Mason Mount.
We’re knee deep in transfer window shenanigans and while this lot aren’t new signings they will feel like they are having barely played last season.
The Manchester United star played with ‘fear’ last season and Louis Saha isn’t buying the ‘excuses’ made for his poor form.
