Report reveals Man Utd budget for new keeper as two targets are named in ‘most likely outcome’

Man Utd are likely to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window even if David de Gea stays at the club, according to reports.

The Spaniard is the only player left from Sir Alex Ferguson’s days managing the club with De Gea arriving at Old Trafford in the summer of 2011 for £18.9m from Atletico Madrid.

De Gea has won the Player of the Year award on four occasions and has made 540 appearances in all competitions for Man Utd over 12 seasons.

In recent seasons his place in the starting XI has been questioned by some but De Gea has still produced a number of big moments to remind fans why he has been one of their most important players.

The Spain international’s contract is expiring in the summer but, instead of triggering his one-year extension, Man Utd are attempting to tie him down on a longer deal with lower wages.

And a report yesterday claimed that De Gea with the 32-year-old currently on around £350,000 a week.

It is understood the new deal ‘may not guarantee a first-team place’ for De Gea next season and the Daily Mail today back up the idea that an agreement over a new contract is close.

The Daily Mail also reveals two goalkeepers Man Utd are interested in and the budget they’ve set to give De Gea some ‘competition’. The report adds:

‘The other financial factor prominent in United’s thoughts is how much it would cost to replace De Gea in the summer when a large chunk of Ten Hag’s budget is expected to be spent on a striker, central midfielder and a new centre-back. World-class goalkeepers don’t come cheap.

‘The most likely outcome is that United sign a new keeper in the £15million bracket to provide more competition. They are known to have looked at Dinamo Zagreb’s Dominik Livakovic and Leopold Wahlstedt of Norwegian club Odds BK amongst others.

‘Ten Hag has another option in Dean Henderson but the 26-year-old has made it clear that he would not want to return as back-up for De Gea after a loan spell at Nottingham Forest. Henderson has also been ruled out for several months following thigh surgery.’

De Gea produced a disastrous display against Sevilla in the Europa League last month and his mistake against West Ham at the weekend means it is the fourth time this season that his gaffes have led directly to a goal.

And BT Sport pundit Jermaine Jenas didn’t hold back in his criticism of De Gea after West Ham’s Said Benrahma scored the only goal of the game on Sunday.

Jenas said: “It’s an absolute shocker from David de Gea.

“That’s beyond shocking. His team is in full control of this game and to let one in like that. He’ll know himself.”
