Ornstein reveals Pochettino stance on Spurs return, gives two reasons reunion is ‘convenient’

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino “may be open to a return” to the club, according to David Ornstein.

Pochettino was Tottenham boss between July 2014 and November 2019.

He lost his job after a terrible start to the 2019-20 season but is widely regarded as one of the club’s best managers of all time.

The Argentine may not have guided Tottenham to a trophy win during his stint in charge, but he made them genuine title contenders and helped the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli blossom into world-class players.

A second-place finish in 16-17 was sandwiched in between two third-place finishes under Pochettino, who also led Tottenham to the Champions League final in his last full season in charge.

This current Spurs side are a far cry from the Pochettino days – although they are still unable to win a trophy, so there is that.

Current head coach Antonio Conte got the club back into the Champions League via a fourth-place finish last season, but the Premier League side crashed out of the competition on Wednesday evening.

Conte has a notably poor record in Europe despite his incredible domestic success with Chelsea, Inter Milan and Juventus.

A 1-0 aggregate defeat to AC Milan has resulted in a huge inquest when his contract expires this summer.

Some Spurs fans are eager to see Daniel Levy re-appoint Pochettino, while others believe it would be the wrong decision.

Pochettino is the favourite to replace Conte should he leave, while Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi are also linked with the job.

Journalist David Ornstein has discussed the possibility of Pochettino coming back to north London.

The Argentine manager is out of work after leaving Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season.

“That’s the important thing here, because he may be open to a return to Tottenham, he may be open to other options as well.

“There’s talk of pressure for Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid and I suspect that Pochettino would be under consideration at clubs like that. There may be other vacancies that arise as well.

“There is a convenience factor here, 1) because Pochettino lives in Hertfordshire; 2) because he knows Tottenham and Daniel Levy well, and there will be that temptation, if and when Antonio Conte leaves, to turn back the clock.”
