Manchester United are set to battle Chelsea for Valencia star Giorgi Mamardashvili this summer, according to reports.
Mamardashvili has been in fine form for Valencia having joined the La Liga side from Dinamo Tbilisi in the summer of 2021.
Initially signed for the Valencia B team, the 22-year-old quickly found himself in the first team after injuries to both Jasper Cillesen and Jaume Domenech.
He’s since established himself not only as No.1 at Estadio Mestalla but also as one of the hottest young goalkeepers in Europe.
And the Georgian’s recent displays have caught the attention of both United and Chelsea, according to Spanish outlet COPE.
Erik ten Hag is reportedly looking for competition for a first team spot for David de Gea, who’s expected to sign a new deal at Old Trafford, while Chelsea want to replace Edouard Mendy, who looks set to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season having turned down ‘disrespectful’ contract offers.
Mamardashvili has a release clause of £87m, but that doesn’t appear to have put off United or Chelsea, with both clubs said to have spoken to the goalkeeper’s representatives.
And they could end up snatching him for a cut-price fee as Valencia are in danger of relegation, with Los Che sitting just outside the bottom three on the head-to-head rule.
after Ten Hag agreed to allow Dean Henderson to leave for Nottingham Forest on loan.
Speaking to Plaza Deportiva about his future at the time, Mamardashvili said: “I have a 2+1 contract with Valencia and I’m happy. I really like Valencia as a city, I like the people.
When asked about reported interest from United, Mamardashvili added: “I see it but now the first thing is Valencia. Then we’ll see.
“It is very important for me to be happy and I am happy, I like the team, I like the city.”
