Frank McAvennie says he feels for Liverpool summer signing Darwin Nunez, as “everything about the club is for winners” and “some people can’t handle that”.

Nunez cost the Reds in the region of £65million, with add-ons meaning the signing will rise a fair way further. Indeed, he’s one of the club’s most expensive signings ever.

After 26 goals in 28 league games at Benfica last season, the Merseysiders would have thought they were getting quite the accomplished forward.

However, Nunez himself has and named his finishing as one, as he’s received flak for the amount of chances he has missed.

Former top-flight forward McAvennie has admitted Nunez might not be at the level to play for a club the size of Liverpool.

“I feel for him because he is a decent player but some clubs are just too big for certain players,” he told Football Insider.

“I am not talking about the club being huge, there is a whole atmosphere around the club, it is for winners. Everything about the club is for winners and some people can’t handle that.

“Liverpool fans demand every game that you give 100 per cent. I feel sorry for him because he is missing some chances.”

Indeed, Nunez has had a hard time in front of goal, and he’d have been expected to score more. However, it’s not as if he hasn’t had an impact at all.

In a team that are playing way below the standards they have set for themselves, he’s the second-top goalscorer with 10 goals.

He’s also shown himself to be a team player in some situations as well. Indeed, he’s provided four assists this season, every single one has been to Mohamed Salah.

As such, he knows how to find a player who can find the net, even in situations where he can’t. With that being said, it would be unfair to say he can’t handle playing for Liverpool.

McAvennie didn’t say that outright, but he hinted at it the club being too big for him, which is why he’s missing chances. Nunez is not the reason for them being in poor form though, there are a few areas of the side in worse shape.
