Daniel Levy is reportedly prepared to pay to release Xabi Alonso from his Bayer Leverkusen contract in order to install him as the Tottenham manager.

Spurs are likely to appoint a new manager for next season. The chance of getting anything out of the campaign seems to have gone, with the north London outfit now six points outside the top four, with only three games remaining.

However, Manchester United, in fourth, have two games in hand over them, so Champions League may soon be fully gone.

Whether or not they care too much about securing Europa League football is another question. In any case, there seems little point appointing a new boss for the last three games.

What’s more, Ryan Mason guided Spurs to a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace in their last game, so there seems no reason for him not to continue through to the end of the season.

However, it’s clear that, beyond that point, Levy wants a new boss at the helm. Tottenham have been linked with a few options to take up the role.

Julian Nagelsmann has been one of the main names on the list. How likely his appointment is is unclear, with . There is also speculation over Spurs having to pay compensation to Bayern Munich if they hire him.

The Mirror reports former Premier League midfielder Alonso is the ‘no.1 choice’ to take up the role. What’s more, Spurs chairman Levy seems to have cleared a path to that appointment.

Indeed, Tottenham will reportedly ‘pay for Alonso’s release’ from his current side Bayer Leverkusen. The report suggests that leaves ‘a successful interview’ as the one stumbling block in the way of the snare.

However, that might not quite be the case. Recent reports suggested Tottenham are not the only side who have their eye on Alonso to take them forwards.

Indeed, his former side . That’s as there is potential that incumbent manager Carlo Ancelotti ups sticks to Brazil, to take charge of their national team.

While Real have another former player of theirs in Raul on the shortlist, Florentino Perez is apparently pushing for Alonso’s appointment.

It’s little wonder why, given he’s pushed Leverkusen up the table and got them into the Europa League semi-finals. That’s another thing that’s making it tough for Spurs – there aren’t many suitable times to negotiate with Alonso with those coming up.
