Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is looking to Nicolo Barella and Alexis Mac Allister to lead his rebuild at Anfield, according to reports.

The Reds are having a poor season by their recent standards with Klopp’s men currently eighth in the Premier League with no prospect of silverware.

has given Liverpool a slim chance of making the top four – but they will probably have to win every game until the end of the season.

The Liverpool midfield has taken the brunt of the criticism for their poor campaign with speculation that they will buy at least two new midfielders in the summer transfer window.

There have been numerous names linked with Klopp insisting last week that they would not be making any attempt to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham in the summer.

, Liverpool’s attention has turned elsewhere with Inter Live claiming that they could strike a double blow to Inter Milan this summer.

It is understood that the Reds are planning a ‘real revolution’ at Anfield with Barella someone Klopp has ‘always liked’ and Liverpool are prepared to pay as much as €60m for the Italy international.

Brighton midfielder Mac Allister has also been heavily linked with Liverpool following his heroics for the Seagulls and Argentina this season and the report adds that the 24-year-old also ‘remains a real’ target for Inter.

Liverpool will ‘above all try to sign’ Mac Allister with a fee of around €70m understood to be good enough to land the Argentina international but Inter Live doubt the Italian outfit could match the Reds.

It all adds up to a ‘rather expensive overall investment worth €130m (£115m)’ for Barella and Mac Allister and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed that there is an “expectation” that an “early transfer” will be agreed for Mac Allister.

Touching on potential Liverpool interest in Conor Gallagher and other midfield targets, Romano wrote in his Caught Offside column: “I’m aware there has been talk of Liverpool, Newcastle and others eyeing up Conor Gallagher.

“His departure this summer is a possibility, but nothing clear yet on clubs approaching him. There’s nothing advanced at this stage. Chelsea will consider bids as they need to sell some players but nothing is 100% decided yet.

“Regarding reports of an important Liverpool recruitment meeting taking place last week – honestly it’s normal for top clubs to meet and discuss targets, it does not sound to me like big news. It’s routine for football clubs. What I can tell you for now is that Jurgen Klopp will have big role in the decisions and midfielders remain the priority for the Reds.

“Jurgen Klopp on how many new signings will be completed: “I cannot give you a number, I don’t want to give you a number. It’s about doing the right things. We always try to be smart in the transfer market.”
