Jamie Carragher reckons Liverpool could get into the top four if they played as well as they did against Leeds until the end of the season – but he suspects the Reds will put in “two or three performances that leave you scratching your head”.

Liverpool put on a brilliant display at Elland Road on Monday night as they with Mo Salah and Diogo Jota helping themselves to braces, while Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez also got on the scoresheet.

It has been a disappointing season for Liverpool and their fans with no chance of any success at the business end of the season as Klopp’s side sit eighth in the Premier League.

With eight games to go, Liverpool are nine points adrift of fourth-placed Newcastle United – who occupy the final Champions League spot – as they keep up their outside chance of finishing in the top four.

The convincing victory over Leeds was their first in five games with their last win coming against Manchester United in a 7-0 demolition of Erik ten Hag’s men.

And, when asked if Liverpool could still make a late run for Champions League qualification, Carragher had mixed feelings.

“If Liverpool play like that and have a consistent run of performances and get anywhere close to that tonight… the fixtures are most games you feel they should win,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“But as we saw with the graphic tonight, that’s the first time they’ve beaten someone below them away from home in the league this season.

“The problem is you can’t trust Liverpool and you haven’t been able to trust them since the first game of the season.

“I still think between now and the end of the season we’ll still see two or three performances that leave you scratching your head.”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp thought it was the best his side have played all season on Monday night with the German picking out “lots of good moments”.

Klopp said after the match: “The moment in the game I enjoyed the most was the 92nd minute. It’s already 6-1 and we lose the ball and we had four players chasing.

“From a counter-pressing point of view that was definitely the best game we’ve played this season, in possession probably as well.

“There were lots of good moments. Last goal, sensational pass from Trent (Alexander-Arnold) and Darwin (Nunez) can finish it off. It was a good game.”

Klopp added; “We’ve played a really bad season, but some things are not really to explain.

“Some things are, some things aren’t. Some things are definitely not acceptable, but now we can put in good performances we can understand what is possible.

“That’s really important for me and that’s why I don’t think where we can push to, I just want us to play top football and win games and we’ll see where we end up.”
