Barcelona received an ‘exciting response’ to their interest in Man Utd forward Marcus Rashford in 2019 with three transfer meetings held, according to reports.

There have been doubts over the last year or two about whether Rashford’s future would lie at Old Trafford with his contract running out in June 2024.

Last season was his worst at the club with the academy graduate only scoring five goals in 34 matches in all competitions .

But the Man Utd forward has managed to turn a corner this season with Rashford in brilliant form and contributing 21 goals and six assists in 34 games in all competitions.

Rashford is now set to stay at Man Utd with the 25-year-old’s representatives reportedly in over a contract renewal as the England international looks to remain in the Premier League.

But Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness) claims it could’ve been a lot different in 2019 with Rashford almost signing for Barcelona.

The Catalan giants ‘tried to sign’ Rashford from Man Utd – who have yet to win a Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013 – and Barca ‘received information that the English striker had doubts about whether or not to renew with United’.

Barcelona made contact with Rashford’s representatives with the La Liga giants moving  ‘to test Rashford’s predisposition and received an exciting response’.

The Man Utd forward ‘wanted to hear’ the Barcelona proposal but, after ‘three meetings’, Rashford ‘did not dare to make the leap’ as when his agents and brothers ‘made a commitment to Barca not to renew and to force a departure from United in 2019, the boy became dizzy.’

He told his representatives that he ‘preferred to stay’ at Old Trafford and that was the end of that, despite Xavi’s complimentary words in a recent press conference.

and ahead of the tie Xavi had some nice words for the England forward.

Xavi told reporters: “He’s one of the most dangerous forwards in Europe. He’s quick, can take people on one on one and we’ll have to be very vigilant with him. He’s one of the best in Europe, without a doubt.”

And it’s not just Xavi who has had good words to say about Rashford recently with his manager at Man Utd, Erik ten Hag, praising him after their recent 2-0 win over Leeds United.

“If he is making the right movements that he or his team will bring him in the right position to score goals and then it’s about the score goals.

“In this moment he’s in such a flow. He brings it every game on the pitch.

“So, if he has that energy, those levels, he will score goals and the only thing what the team has to do is get him in that position.”
