Arsenal are reportedly lining up a stunning swoop for Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries in the summer, who has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea and Manchester United.
The Gunners missed out on signing for the winger, so this is an opportunity for Mikel Arteta and co to take revenge.
There is no shortage of interest in Dumfries, though, so they still have plenty of work to do to get a summer switch over the line.
Arsenal’s current backup right back, Takehiro Tomiyasu, made a huge error in their title-race clash against Manchester City on Wednesday.
Now, it seems Arteta would like to reinforce that area. According to reports from Spain, the manager has put Dumfries at the top of his summer shortlist.
The reports state that Inter need to generate at least £53m from player sales at the end of the season due to their ongoing financial issues, so they could be forced to sell some of their prized assets.
Dumfries certainly fits into that category, after impressing in the Serie A for the Italian giants.
Since joining the club from PSV Eindhoven in August 2021, the Dutchman has made 71 appearances across all competitions, scoring seven goals and making 10 assists overall.
Dumfries also impressed playing in the World Cup for the Netherlands, as the Oranges reached the quarter-finals of the competition, which attracted interest from some top European clubs.
In December, Dumfries addressed the speculation over his future, saying: “Of course, it’s a big compliment to be linked with Chelsea, but playing for Inter it’s a big compliment too.
“Chelsea move in January? I’m focused on nothing else but the national team and Inter.”
Then, during the winter window, his agent Rafael Pimenta issued an update on the exit rumours, stating: “Denzel has played a great World Cup.
Despite Arsenal is arguably the more appealing destination, as they are flying under Arteta this season.
Indeed, despite dropping points to Manchester City on Wednesday, they are very much still in the title race and look guaranteed to be playing Champions League football next season.
The same can definitely not be said for Chelsea, who currently sit in a disappointing tenth place in the Premier League table.
United, on the other hand, are having a good season under Erik ten Hag, with them too having an outside chance of lifting their first league title since 2013.
Inter will likely try and get as much money as possible for Dumfries in the summer if he does opt to leave the San Siro.
But, due to their ongoing financial woes, the Italian giants may be powerless to prevent his departure.
