Ally McCoist has warned Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou that Tottenham are “a club that is a little bit of a basket case at this moment in time”.

Postecoglou has emerged as the Premier League club’s number-one managerial target after being turned down by Julian Nagelsmann and Arne Slot.

The former was the leading candidate following the sacking of Antonio Conte before he withdrew from the race, making Feyenoord manager Slot Daniel Levy’s preferred appointment.

Slot opted against a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium despite hinting he was open to the move, however, with many believing he used the Londoners to receive a new contract and ultimately a pay rise.

Postecoglou has done a brilliant job at Celtic, , one that Steven Gerrard struggled with after leaving Rangers for Aston Villa in November 2021.

After replacing Neil Lennon in the summer of 2021, expectations were low for Postecoglou with the Hoops going through a transitional period.

The Aussie actually got off to a pretty slow start, losing his first three away games in the league after crashing out of the second qualifying round in the Champions League.

After their third Scottish Premiership loss in a row, Celtic went unbeaten for the rest of the league season as Postecoglou’s men beat arch-rivals Rangers to the title.

Despite his stellar work at Celtic Park, many Spurs fans might feel like the appointment of the Australian is underwhelming and similar to Nuno Espirito Santo, who also joined as manager having initially Levy’s fourth or fifth choice.

And with all that is going on at , Postecoglou has been warned that he would be walking into a very difficult situation.

There is a lot of toxicity in the air with the vast majority of fans wanting to see Daniel Levy sell the club.

Furthermore, Harry Kane is out of contract next year and reportedly has no desire to extend his deal, with a move to Manchester United potentially on.

“He’d clearly be going to a better league, we can’t argue about that,” McCoist said. “I don’t think we can argue about that but it is a gamble.

“He’s going to a club that is a little bit of a basket case at this moment in time where some seriously good coaches haven’t succeeded.

“They could potentially lose their key asset, Harry Kane. Of course the facilities are good, so I can understand the attraction of him going but I can also understand the desire to stay.”

And former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has said he thinks Big Ange will join Spurs following the Bhoys’ Scottish Cup final against Inverness this weekend after he refused to rule himself out of the running.

Sutton said: “Let’s get it right. This week, Ange Postecoglou could have put this story to bed.

“He could have said he is staying at Celtic. The fact he hasn’t, most Celtic fans are thinking after the cup final most probably something will happen.

“But this is a guy who is ambitious and will want to manage in the Premier League. It’s not like when Brendan Rodgers left under a cloud, I think most fans would wish Ange well.”
