VfL Wolfsburg started well against Bayern Munich on Bundesliga Matchday 2 but ended up slipping to a 2-0 defeat at the home of the German champions. Jamal Musiala put the hosts in front in the 33rd minute before Thomas Müller completed the scoring with his first goal of the season shortly before the break (44’).

The Wolves welcome FC Schalke 04 to the Volkswagen Arena in their next match on Saturday 20 August (kick-off 15:30 CEST).

VfL head coach Niko Kovac made one change to the side that drew against Werder Bremen last weekend, Josuha Guilavogui – whose late goal earned the Wolves a point in their opener – replacing Josip Brekalo. As for Bayern, Julian Nagelsmann kept faith with the XI that started the 6-1 victory in Frankfurt.

Niko Kovac: “I think we did a good job in the first 30 minutes and perhaps made things a little more difficult for Bayern than expected. If you want to get anything here, you have to make the most of the few chances you get. We had one good opportunity in the first half and another in the first 10 minutes of the second half. All in all, it’s a fair result.”

Julian Nagelsmann: “I wasn’t completely happy in the first quarter of an hour. We had problems bringing our energy onto the pitch and Wolfsburg were very good physically. After that we did better and also had more possession and more control, without throwing everything forward. Wolfsburg were very deep when we were pressing – we could have scored more goals in that period. In the second half we had two or three chances. The goals that were disallowed for offside were very tight calls. It was a deserved victory on the whole.”
