“With Amos Pieper being absent for so long, we were aiming to strengthen our back line. Julián is a promising young talent who we’ve had our eye on for a while now and believe we can use in both the centre-back role and on the right. We’re pleased to have signed him as early as the winter,” explained head of professional football Clemens Fritz.
“We’ve heard very encouraging things about Julián. He’s a tall defender with good raw pace and tackling ability, and he has great potential. I’m looking forward to working with him,” said Werder head coach Ole Werner about the 1.91m-tall stopper.
Julián Malatini is looking forward to his new challenge in the Bundesliga: “Playing in Europe is the dream for every footballer in South America. After I heard about the interest from Werder, it was clear to me straight away that I wanted to take this opportunity. The Bundesliga is one of the biggest leagues in the world. I can’t wait to get on the pitch for the first time.”
Clemens Fritz was quick to manage the expectations of the Argentina U23 international: “Julián is in Europe for the first time, so he’ll firstly need to get settled in Bremen and within the squad.” In order to help him integrate, former Werder player and current U23s assistant coach Nelson Valdez will be part of the first team coaching staff until further notice. “Nelson made a similar move as a youngster and his experiences will be helpful for him. He will be his go-to guy both on and off the pitch, and will be there to help him settle into life in Bremen and integrate into the team.”
