The initiative promotes women’s leadership in football and emphasises gender equity, climate awareness and creating safe spaces for girls. Coaches were also trained to engage youth on climate issues, responding to Vietnam’s increasing extreme weather events.

Using sport as a tool for social change

Last season, SV Werder Bremen organised two coaching clinics in Vietnam as part of their football development program. From these sessions, two local Vietnamese coaches were selected to travel to Ha Giang on behalf of SV Werder Bremen, where they provided basic football training to 18 female teachers. The workshop aimed to enhance the participants’ football knowledge, with a focus on using sport as a tool for social change. Additionally, the local facilitators took part in ‘Fun Football Festivals’ to showcase the unifying power of football within the community. The workshop aimed to empower participants as both coaches and leaders, focusing on advanced training methods, environmental education and practical football skills.

Participants will soon host 18 Fun Football Festivals across several provinces, promoting climate protection and leadership, with support from Werder Bremen. The club’s involvement reinforces its dedication to using football as a tool for social change and empowering women in Vietnam.

“Football can be a driver for advancing social issues, and we are proud to support this initiative together with our partners Common Goal,” said Dominik Kupilas, head of fan & business development at Werder Bremen.
