Not only are the Green-Whites preparing to welcome last season’s double winners from Leverkusen to the Weserstadion, but it will also be their first match this term to take place at the primetime slot on a Saturday evening. The team are hoping to send their fans home in a celebratory mood, as Werner explained. “I hope that we will be able to give people reason to celebrate at the Freimarkt afterwards. Floodlight games are always something special here, as you can feel a different sort of energy inside the stadium. We’re really looking forward to playing under the lights for the first time this season at home.”
Werder’s last game to take place in the evening saw them return home with a 4-2 win in hand from Wolfsburg on Sunday. Marvin Ducksch contributed a goal and two assists, while new signing Marco Grüll managed to net his first goal for Werder and in the Bundesliga. Asked whether this was a sign of the so-called ‘ketchup bottle effect,’ Werner said, “For me, it’s important that we are successful as a team. This doesn’t just concern the goals that our strikers score, but also includes many other things. Namely, that we remember our tactics and that the lads stick to all the basics. If that all goes well, then everything else falls into place, and the positives seem to come on their own.”
