The centre-back certainly isn’t pleased with the start to the season. Each of the games played tells its own story, which is why Friedl is looking at the bigger picture. “We all need to step up. However, I don’t feel that the team isn’t taking things seriously,” Werder’s number 32 explained. “We have been tough on ourselves and have spoken things through clearly. At the end of the day, it’s about achieving our peak performance. We haven’t managed that yet and we deserve to be where we are as a result.”

“It’s important that we stick together as a team”

Another recurring theme is the number of goals conceded, which was already an issue last season. In Friedl’s eyes, it’s too easy to conclude upon analysis that solely the defenders are responsible for this: “It’s important that we stick together as a team and don’t blame any single individual,” he explained. “We’re making too many errors as a team in the crucial moments, which are leading to goals.”

In the meantime, conversations are taking place between the team council and head coach Ole Werner in order to discuss different options. After the international break, the Green-Whites will have to carry out their game plan especially well to take points from Dortmund. “We know that we’ll need everything to go our way, but that’s what we’re trying to make happen and succeeded in last year,” says Friedl. “When we had our backs to the wall, we repeatedly demonstrated that we can play football. We shouldn’t hide away and should instead believe in what we can do.”
