It is always part and parcel of a long, energy-sapping season that a Bundesliga team will have to rotate because of injuries. Werner’s squad have had to adjust to new circumstances and absentees on many occasions throughout the season so far, and he is trying to make the best of it. “It’s the story of our year,” said the head coach. “But we’ve got other players who can perform well. Players who now have the chance to impress one last time before the winter break. It’s always a great opportunity for them.”
Christmas will come early for the fans if the Green-Whites are able put in a strong performance against RB Leipzig and head into the winter break on the back of a win. Ole Werner believes that shying away from the opposition is never the right solution. “I want to see a team who create their own chances and make the most of them when they arise,” shared the 35-year-old. “We want to make it difficult for them and press with intensity. We have to remain compact and support each other in our battles, which is ultimately the key to success in football.”
After the game, the boys will be able to enjoy a brief period of rest and relaxation over Christmas and New Year, but Ole Werner has mixed feelings about it. “The break may have come at a good time in terms of the injuries in our squad, but it wasn’t really necessary for our development after a few good performances over the last few weeks.” Despite this, the head coach is sure of one thing. “I’m not feeling very Christmassy at the moment, but even I’ll be excited about it after the game.”
