When Alvero first set foot in the changing room, his new teammates were unable to hide their surprise. “Apparently I have a big presence when I walk into a room,” smiled the 6’8” midfielder. Although people may expect heading the ball to be the best tool in his armoury, Skelly’s number one strength lies elsewhere. “My passes are very precise, that’s what I do best,” explained the 21-year-old, who considers his height to be beneficial to his performance. “It’s obviously a physical advantage, because I’m taller than most of the other players. Maybe my jumps aren’t as powerful, but I still see it more as a positive.”

The youngster is looking to use his size to his advantage in order to help the team over the coming months. “I bring new qualities to the pitch with my height that perhaps weren’t there before,” he explained. “I’m very versatile in the midfield, but it’s up to the coach where I play,” added Alvero, who feels right at home in the centre.

After a difficult few months with little game time at Olympique Lyonnais, Skelly is now looking forward to facing a new challenge in the German top flight. “It’s an incredible opportunity for me. The Bundesliga is an interesting league with a great reputation. Many French footballers also compete in the second division, and they’ve gone on to be very successful. That’s why I’m proud to be playing here.”
