“An extremely disappointing afternoon”

Head coach Ole Werner: “It’s an extremely disappointing afternoon for us and a deserved win for Bayern. We were playing against a far superior opponent. Us not performing to the best of our abilities allowed a result like that to happen. In particular, we lacked accuracy and support when in possession, while we also gifted them several goals. These are things that we can learn from and that we will improve on. Nevertheless, we need to focus on the things that the team did well recently in order for us to showcase that in Hoffenheim again.”

Head of professional football Peter Niemeyer: “Firstly, we need to acknowledge that Bayern were in phenomenal form. They pressed well and we weren’t able to find any options when we had the ball. When you find yourself in a similar situation against them, it can happen that you get pushed back, which is why we’d decided to play a bit of a higher line against them. From the start, we could see it didn’t work. We will analyse the match and discuss what we can improve on.”

Niklas Stark: “Bayern had a great day, while we didn’t. That’s what you need when playing against them, otherwise you get a result like the one today. Every time we managed to get our foot in the door, we’d concede. That really knocked us off our rhythm. We weren’t able to bring what we’d set out to do to the pitch. It’s a defeat that stings, but it won’t knock us off course.”

Michael Zetterer: “We knew that it would be tough against them. But, that’s not an excuse for the way we defended across the 90 minutes. We were completely harmless against the ball and gave them far too much space — which is fatal, given their current form. After the fourth, fifth goal, it’s frustrating to know that you aren’t in the game at all.”

Amos Pieper: “We’d set high targets for ourselves today and had last season’s game in Munich in our minds. We knew that a lot would have to go right in order for that to happen, which wasn’t the case. We gave up possession too often and that resulted in two or three goals. Bayern are a quality side and it’s disappointing for us that they managed to convert their chances. The support from the fans was extremely special and not something that we can take for granted.”

The way they performed was completely different to last season.

Mitchell Weiser

Mitchell Weiser: “We were defending deep. The 1-0 came following an error from me in the build-up, which is annoying. We had told ourselves that we wanted to be brave when in possession, but we rarely managed to leave our half of the pitch and to hold onto the ball. Bayern dominated play and we barely had any respite. The way they performed was completely different to last season. It was pretty brutal.”

Anthony Jung: “There’s not much to say. We were completely without a chance and outgunned in every area. It’s a deserved defeat, as it would have been a tough task even if we’d managed a top performance. Bayern were on a different level and we did too little to deny them. There aren’t any excuses to be made. We need to accept it and look ahead at what’s next.”
