Amos Pieper and Marvin Ducksch were visibly exhausted when they sat down for an interview with WERDER.DE at the end of the camp. The players were put through their paces in Zilltertal with double training sessions on most days and the friendly against Toulouse (5-2). Head coach Ole Werner explained that getting on a “good level physically” was the most important thing about the time in Austria. The fans who made the journey to support the Green-Whites were able to see what Clemens Fritz meant when he said that the players would be “pushed to their limits” at the camp.

The only setback for SVW across the ten days was Marco Friedl’s abdominal injury, which he suffered in the 5-2 win over Toulouse. Milos Veljkovic and Mitchell Weiser, however, were able to work on their respective comebacks, whereas Naby Keïta completed individual sessions and was able to get to know his teammates. “There’s a great atmosphere within the team,” said Ole Werner.

The players and staff are now happy to be back with their families after a lengthy spell away from home. “I won’t be able to tell my wife much about the training camp at first because my kids will run straight into my arms,” said Christian Groß after the friendlies on Friday in Innsbruck. “When my kids are asleep I’ll be able to tell her about it,” he continued. Focus now turns to adding the finishing touches to the pre-season when the players return to training on Tuesday.
