Central defender Timo Baumgartl has signed for 1. FC Union Berlin as preparation continues for the first Bundesliga match of the new season in August. The 25-year-old has agreed a loan switch from Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven with the Köpenick club agreeing the option of a release clause.
The defender made his debut at VfB Stuttgart after coming through three years of development at the club. He would go on to play 121 games for the club before signing for PSV in 2019. In the Eredivisie, Baumgartl made 36 appearances for the club and scored two goals in his time in the Netherlands.
“I’m happy to be back in the Bundesliga and to soon be able to play at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. I would like to contribute to Union’s positive development and establish myself in the Bundesliga together with my new team, but also play a good role in the Conference League and the Cup,” said the defender.
“Timo Baumgartl is an experienced player with many attributes that fit us. Now was a good opportunity for both sides to come together and we are looking forward to a defensive player with many different qualities in a three or four-man backline,” said Oliver Ruhnert, 1. FC Union Berlin’s Managing Director of Professional Football.
