When Ailien Poese was installed as full-time head coach of 1. FC Union Berlin’s 1st women’s team the club had already begun the process of professionalising women’s football in Köpenick. As part of her responsibilities the new head coach also took over the management of the women’s and girls’ department.
The central goal is to establish high performance, professional football for women at Union, and ultimately leading the 1st women’s team – currently playing in the Regionalliga – to the Bundesliga.
After a season working under this premise, it has made sense to separate the positions of head coach and head of department in order to give both important tasks the strength and concentration required to deliver them.
At the beginning of February former German international Jennifer Zietz took up her position as sporting director of the 1st women’s team, and has since been responsible for improving the infrastructure and squad planning. She will now also take over the management of the women’s and girls’ department from Poese, who, as head coach, is now fully dedicated to the further sporting development of the team.
With four matches to go, 1. FC Union Berlin are currently second in the Regionalliga Nordost, seven points behind FC Viktoria Berlin. Last weekend, the team won 4-1 against Magdeburger FFC.
On Monday, 01.05.2023, as part of the traditional women’s football day, a friendly against 1. FC Köln II is scheduled at the stadium An der Alten Försterei. Admission is free.
