The women’s team of 1. FC Union Berlin can look forward to the services of goalkeeper Cara Bösl in the coming season. The 27-year-old joins Union from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Stopper’s talent spotted early

Bösl already showed great talent as a child with the youth of SV Alemannia Königstädten, first as an outfield player and then as a goalkeeper. Her skills brought her to the attention of the DFB via the Darmstadt regional, and then the Hessen representative sides, with whom she won the U15 national cup, finally leading her to 1. FFC Frankfurt (now known as Eintracht Frankfurt). Within three years, she managed to progress from the U17 team to the second team to the Bundesliga first team. She has now kept goal in Frankfurt for twelve years, making a total of 13 appearances in the Bundesliga.

In addition to two appearances in the DFB Pokal and almost 50 2. Liga appearances, Bösl has also gained European experience having kept a clean sheet in qualifying for the UEFA Women’s Champions League in 2022/23, but was eliminated in the next round against Ajax Amsterdam. This year, the Rüsselsheim native played one half against the eventual Champions League winners FC Barcelona in the main round of Europe’s premier club competition.

In addition to her sporting career, Cara Bösl successfully completed a degree in sport and education. She is currently completing her Master’s degree.

Three facts about Cara

  • Bösl runs a hobby plant nursery with rare houseplants
  • She didn’t concede a goal on her debut in the women’s Bundesliga
  • Danger of confusion: Bösl has a twin sister

The views on the transfer

“After more than a decade in Frankfurt, I want to take everything I learned there with me to Union and support the club as best I can with my skills,” said a delighted Bösl on her move to the capital. “I was totally convinced by the conditions available and I firmly believe that we will continue on our successful path. I’m really looking forward to my time in Berlin and am ready for this new challenge.”

“With Cara, we’re getting a goalkeeper who has already gained experience at the highest level in the Bundesliga and Champions League,” said Union’s director of women’s professional football, Jennifer Zietz, meanwhile. “In our talks, she conveyed that she is highly motivated and wants to help our team progress. In the 2. Liga, we will face different defensive challenges, and are therefore convinced that she can become an important part of the team.”
