VfB head coach Sebastian Hoeneß has just two personnel doubts ahead of the DFB Cup semi-final. “Serhou Guirassy completed most of our training session on Tuesday,” said the tactician of the forward. “His feedback afterwards was positive. We still need to wait and see, but we’re assuming that he’ll keep improving so that he can be an option for the squad.” Meanwhile, Waldemar Anton (stomach upset) was unable to participate in Tuesday’s training session, which took place at the Mercedes-Benz Arena to set the mood ahead of the game. “We hope he’ll be fit by tomorrow,” explained Hoeneß.

“Huge opportunity”

The VfB boss is expecting a strong Frankfurt side to take to the pitch on Wednesday: “Frankfurt are a long way above us in the table and they did really well in the Champions League. We’d be well advised to approach the game with a certain humility. We’ve gained in self-confidence over the last few games. This week offers us a huge opportunity, it’s a special highlight.”

The mood in the squad is relaxed, although mixed with a degree of positive tension. “The boys are up for it, the atmosphere is good,” Hoeneß said. “On Wednesday evening it’s about finding that blend of tension, focus and concentration. Playing such an incredible occasion in our stadium isn’t something that happens every day. We want to seize the opportunity and give the best account of ourselves that we can. It’ll be an exciting and interesting game that we’re all looking forward to.”
