Reunited
Both coaches – VfB boss Sebastian Hoeneß and Hoffenheim’s Pellegrino Matarazzo – take on their former clubs this weekend. Hoeneß was in charge of TSG from 2020 until 2022, while Matarazzo held the reins at VfB between 2019 and 2022.
Angelo Stiller joined Stuttgart in August after a two-year stint in Hoffenheim. The midfielder has played every minute for Hoeneß’s side since Matchday 3.
Ozan Kabak is another familiar name in Hoffenheim’s ranks. The defender, who joined TSG last year, signed for Stuttgart at the beginning of 2019 before leaving for Schalke six months later.
Goals
There have been 84 goals in the 26 previous Bundesliga meetings between the teams – 3.23 per game on average.
The highest-scoring encounter came in September 2013, when VfB won 6-2 at home courtesy of a Vedad Ibisevic hat-trick, a double from Alexandru Maxim and an Antonio Rüdiger effort.
VfB fortress
Hoeneß’s team are unbeaten in eight Bundesliga home games stretching back to last term. After ending the 2022/23 season with a win and three draws on home soil (including a 1-1 draw with TSG), VfB have started the current campaign with four straight victories in front of their own fans. Hoffenheim, however, have claimed all three points in all four of their away matches so far.
Personnel
Sebastian Hoeneß will take on his former club without the services of the league’s top scorer Serhou Guirassy due to a muscle injury. Dan-Axel Zagadou has been able to complete some parts of team training, but there’s still a question mark over his involvement. Josha Vagnoman, Fabian Bredlow, Dennis Seimen and Nikolas Nartey remain sidelined.
