Hello Woo, welcome back in Stuttgart and congratulations again on winning a gold medal at the Asian Games in China. Who did you call first after winning the final?
Wooyeong Jeong: “Right after the game I thought it was all a dream. I then called my parents first – they were obviously very pleased with our success. The rest of the family was very happy for me too. My whole family watched all the games.”
Did you have time to properly celebrate your success with the national team?
Wooyeong: “After winning the final we returned to Korea. We all ate and celebrated together before going our separate ways the following day. Some of us had to join up with the senior side for two friendlies against Tunisia and Vietnam, including me.”
Were you in touch with your VfB team-mates after winning the final?
Wooyeong: “I FaceTimed the lads straight after the final. Waldi [Waldemar Anton] called me as I was sitting on the team bus. My team-mates and coach were all really pleased for me when I showed them my gold medal. At that moment, it really hit home again what we’d achieved.”
Are you looking forward to hitting the ground running in the Bundesliga again? You were top scorer at the Asian Games with eight goals and scored another in the game against Vietnam…
Wooyeong: “It’s nice to be back here and to be able to play in the Bundesliga. In terms of being an attacking threat, those goals give me a good feeling. If I get to play against Union Berlin, I hope I’ll be able to score and help the team.”
