On Saturday, our favorite songs “Pride of the East” and “Leipzig on fire” will finally be played again in the Red Bull Arena. Be a part of the experience for as little as 17 euros!

As is the case before every match, Marco Rose was available to answer questions from the media ahead of the home game against VfL Bochum.

Are there any updates regarding the injured players? What kind of opponent does our coach expect? And what goals are there for the new season? Here are all the quotes and the Re-live of the entire press conference.

Squad Updates

  • Eljif Elmas, Christoph Baumgartner and El Chadaille Bitshiabu have successfully approved their final physical evaluation ahead of the final training session and will be available to be called up for the match.
  • Xaver Schlager is still following his rehabilitation plan showing positive signs in his recovery. According to Marco Rose: “It’ll still be two to three months” until Xaver is ready to re-join training.

Marco Rose on…

… the current state of preparations:

  • “The atmosphere is good, but that’s usually the case with us. We’re a well-functioning group, the boys like each other and support each other. It’s important that we translate that into a strong performance and energy. We had the EURO 2024 during the summer and therefore a lot of players came back to training late. We had a trip to the USA, which was valuable in sporting terms, but we’re still more or less in a preparation phase. Fortunately, most of the players know what we’re about. Many are going into their second, third or fourth year with us. Some have even been here longer.”

… VfL Bochum:

  • “We gained some insight with the Pokal match, but we don’t really know what to expect yet. I know Peter Zeidler from Salzburg. He stands for values such as aggressive pressing defending and vertical play. We expect a wild game in which we will have little time to refocus and react. There will be a lot of pressing and counter-pressing situations. We will still try to play out our gameplan.”

… Antonio Nusa:

  • “We’re all getting the impression from him that he’s a really good guy, eager to listen and take advice. We noticed that in the talks before he signed, which is one of the reasons why we brought him in. He is a good footballer, dynamic, fast, and good on the one-on-one. He’s joining a new league, so we will give him time to adapt. He is a lot of fun! He gives me the impression that we could start him.”

… Yussuf Poulsen:

  • “He’s the ultimate senior player. We are all aware of what he’s worth and what he symbolizes in the club, the standing he has in the city. You can always count on him! He is the player who has internalized our pressing processes best. Last season he helped Benjamin Sesko improve and was his mentor. Now he’s looking after Antonio Nusa. But I don’t just see him as an “integrator”, when he’s in top shape, he’s also differential on the pitch.”

… Benjamin Sesko:

  • “I expect him to start the next phase of his development. Yussi and Andre are breathing down his neck. We have a lot of options and a lot of competition. He has to be able to face that and deal with it. I expect him to make use of his qualities and maybe score a few more goals than last season.”

… Viggo Gebel:

  • “We brought several youth players with us to the training camp and had them there from the start of the preparation to see where they were at. This youth academy serves us well in bringing young up to the top. Of course, I need to be able to justify promoting them and Viggo brought that to the pitch. He presented himself well in all areas. He goes to school, he takes care of his internship, he’s polite to everyone here… I pay attention to things like that too. He goes into tackles on the pitch, he wants to have the ball. I say to myself: that’s what I want to see. That’s why he got a permanent place in the squad and now he has to defend it. If I have the opportunity to put a good, young Leipzig player on the pitch, then I will do it.”

… the transfer market:

  • “We have a compact but good squad again. Of course we keep our eyes open, but we are not stressed wither with releasing or signing players. Therefore, we can calmly observe the situation in the market during the next few days.”

… the objectives for next season:

  • “We should become more consistent in our performances and results. We want to play more and longer streaks of positive results. We want to continue pushing with the things we have done well, take the next step in our development. And we want to integrate the new players well. We have a young team with exciting players. I’m looking forward to seeing where we stand. I have high hopes for us, and I’ve told the players that as well.”

… title ambitions:

  • “I have no idea who will win the Bundesliga. In the end, I always answer: the team that deserved it over 34 matchdays. Last season, Bayer 04 Leverkusen deserved it. There are many teams that have the championship as their goal, there are many that dream of it. I would say we dream of it too. But ultimately, we have to play well, develop further, go on a roll.”
