1. FC Köln analysis
Tactics
- The “Effzeh” sat 17th in the table, tied on points with Mainz 05 (16th), and Darmstadt 98 (18th) – all ten points – going into the winter break. Those leaders of the Geißbockheim felt forced to act and hired Timo Schultz as the new head coach to replace Steffen Baumgart (now Hamburger SV).
Since then, things have gradually improved: eight points from nine Bundesliga games under Schultz. In terms of the table, they moved up one place to the relegation playoff. The lead over Mainz is currently two points and five points over Darmstadt . The distance to safety is seven points (Bochum, Union Berlin, Wolfsburg – all 25 points).
Köln celebrated their only win so far under new coach Timo Schultz on matchday 20 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt (2-0). Last matchday, Schultz’s team earned a point against Borussia Mönchengladbach (3-3) in an eventful Rhine derby with a late goal.
Recent results have shown that the “Effzeh” are in the race to stay in the league.
