Wout Weghorst was the hero for the Netherlands on Sunday: the TSG Hoffenheim striker scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute to fire the Dutch to a 2-1 victory over Poland. Weghorst had only come on as a substitute two minutes earlier (81st) – and became the match winner with his first touch of the ball. The 31-year-old scored the all-important goal with a typical striker’s finish on his left foot.
Denmark’s first match of EURO 2024 was also on the programme on Sunday. However, Jacob Bruun Larsen did not play in the 1-1 draw with Slovenia.
Things did not go so well for Andrej Kramarić and Attila Szalai on Saturday. Croatia suffered a 3-0 defeat against Spain, with all three Spanish goals falling before the interval. Kramarić was on the pitch for 72 minutes and was involved in a number of dangerous actions.
Attila Szalai also got the European Championship off to a losing start, as his Hungary side fell to a 3-1 defeat against Switzerland. Szalai was in the starting line-up and was substituted off after 79 minutes.
