New signing Wout Weghorst went straight into the TSG Hoffenheim line-up at centre-forward for the first game of the 2023/24 season. The centre of defence was initially without new faces. Goalie Oliver Baumann was protected by a back three of Ozan Kabak, John Anthony Brooks and Kevin Vogt. Pavel Kadeřábek (right) and Marius Bülter (left) started on the flanks. Florian Grillitsch, Grischa Prömel and Angelo Stiller pulled the strings in midfield, with Andrej Kramarić slightly behind Weghorst up top.

VfB Lübeck’s first competitive game of the season came last week when they faced SV Sandhausen in the opening round of the 3. Liga campaign (0-0). But for TSG Hoffenheim, the first round of the DFB-Pokal was the first competitive game of the season.
Moment of the match
The goal for 1-1: the game threatened to go awry following VfB Lübeck’s controversial penalty. But a great piece of individual play from Andrej Kramarić prompted the turnaround. The Croat created space for himself in the penalty area thanks to his classic flicks and then fired powerfully into the left corner – the equaliser laid the foundations for progression to the second round.

TSG fans witnessed two premieres on Monday: Marius Bülter and Julian Justvan both scored their first goals on their first competitive appearances for TSG.

Outlook
Hoffenheim will play host to SC Freiburg in an all-Baden affair on Bundesliga Matchday 1 on Saturday (15:30 CET / Live Ticker at tsg-hoffenheim.de). The second round of the DFB-Pokal will take place on 31 October and 1 November. TSG fans will have to wait until the beginning of October for the draw.
