“Mërgim has proven not only during his time in the Bundesliga with FC Augsburg that he is capable of posing an enormous goal threat to any opponent at any time. He is extremely difficult to defend against and – in addition to his physical presence – also boasts a high level of efficiency in front of the opposition goal. A characteristic that will help us, as a team that has been consistently creating a high number of chances for years,” said TSG Managing Director Alexander Rosen, adding: “His development in the recent past – right up to his debut in a DFB shirt in the 2-0 win over Peru in March this year – has been impressive and together we shall do everything we can to ensure that continues.”
“TSG are an interesting club with an exciting team and I want to play my part their development. The conditions to perform are simply ideal here,” said Mërgim Berisha, who naturally also has his own personal objectives. “The conditions that have been put in place here have already been used by a number of players to improve their performance level. I’m going to work hard on that too, because by doing so I’m ultimately helping the team and the club.”
Berisha came through the youth ranks at top Austrian club FC Red Bull Salzburg, where he finally made his breakthrough in the 2020/21 season following loan spells with Liefering, LASK, 1. FC Magdeburg and SCR Altach. He notched 24 goals and 15 assists in 58 appearances across all competitions in Salzburg, scoring four goals and claiming two assists in six Champions League appearances.
He moved to Istanbul to join Fenerbahçe in the summer of 2021, where he scored eight goals and set up three more in 32 games. Thanks to his goal involvements, he made a major contribution to a runners-up finish in the Turkish league. Following his transfer to the Bundesliga in August 2022, the attacker made 26 Bundesliga appearances for FC Augsburg in which he claimed 10 goals and four assists.
Mërgim Berisha was called up to the Germany senior squad by national coach Hansi Flick for the first time in March 2023 and made appearances in the matches against Peru and Belgium. He became a European champion with the Germany U21 national team in 2021 and played 13 times (one goal) for the German youth team in total.
