Head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo made two changes to his starting eleven from the 4-2 win against Union Berlin, with Stanley Nsoki and Sebastian Rudy starting in place of Kevin Akpoguma and Dennis Geiger.

Thanks to the 4-2 win against Union Berlin, TSG Hoffenheim had already all but secured their survival in the Bundesliga going into the final game of the season. Stuttgart, on the other hand, still had relegation concerns, and had to win in order not to be dependent on results elsewhere.
