“Michael’s move to Munich signals nothing less than the end of an era,” said TSG director of football Alexander Rosen, addressing the departure of a long-term companion. “Michael has been a constant at our club for one and a half decades. He has shaped generations of goalkeepers through his work with the U19s, U23s and the first team. His technical expertise, his creativity and his dedication made him one of the most renowned experts in his field. He’s an improver,” said Rosen in praise of the outgoing Rechner.

“We regret his departure greatly. Ultimately, however, all our efforts to convince him to stay proved unsuccessful. Michael has made his decision and unequivocally communicated that he wants to take a different path. Especially in light of our current situation, we need to see 100% identification and willingness from all team members,” added Rosen.

“I would like to thank Michael for eight extraordinary years. He knew how to surprise me on almost every day of our time working together. Naturally, a friendship also developed over that time. That’s another reason why I regret his departure. But I’m also happy for him that he can take on a new and exciting challenge. I wish him nothing but the best,” said TSG goalkeeper Oliver Baumann.

Alexander Stolz will coach the goalkeeping team until further notice. The 39-year-old former TSG shot-stopper has been working successfully for years in the club’s academy. He has already stood in for Michael Rechner on a number of past occasions when he was away with the Turkish national team.

Michael Rechner ended his playing days as a goalkeeper with FC Zuzenhausen in 2009. He had previously kept goal for VfR and Waldhof Mannheim, Sachsen Leipzig, Schweinfurt 05 and TSG Weinheim. In 2008, he commenced his second career as a goalkeeping coach with the TSG Hoffenheim U19s. He moved up to the club’s U23s five years later and was then leading the training of the first-team goalkeepers within 18 months. He developed goalkeepers like Marvin Schwäbe, Koen Casteels and Gregor Kobel, who are all now first-choice goalkeepers in the Bundesliga. He also prepared talented youngsters like Luca Philipp (22), Nahuel Noll (19, both TSG Hoffenheim) and Daniel Klein (21, FC Augsburg) to make the leap to the professional game. His capabilities also coveted international attention. When Stefan Kuntz took over as the Turkey national team coach in autumn 2021, he appointed Rechner to his coaching staff. TSG gave him permission to accept this secondary job.
