Sebastian Rudy: “We shouldn’t have lost the game. We didn’t allow them many chances and got into some good situations in transition, but in the final third, we didn’t manage to hit the back of the net. Of course, we had to take the great chance to equalise. We didn’t lose our heads even after going 2-0 down and continued to try everything. Unfortunately, by the time we pulled one back, it was too late. We are extremely annoyed to be going home with no points. We need to get over this quickly and win next week.”

Christoph Baumgartner: “We were not good enough in both penalty areas. Although we attempted a lot of crosses and did well up to the 18-yard box, Wolfsburg were always able to clear it. We were lacking composure in the crucial area of the pitch. If we had equalised, the game might have turned out differently. Now we still have two games. They are both like cup finals now and we have to win them. We need to be focused and work hard in training to be ready for the next task. Union will be strong opposition, but we believe in ourselves.”

Grischa Prömel: “We have to analyse the game and also look at what we did better against Frankfurt. After that, we have to get this game out of our heads quickly. Football matches are decided in the box these days. Wolfsburg were more clinical in the box and that’s why they won. It was basically a decent game from us, but decent games are not enough to survive in the Bundesliga. We need to think, be even more aggressive, be more compact and be even better in the duels. Next week, we have the chance to put that into practice right away. We now have to be focused, get to work, and it’s all in our own hands. Union are on a great run, but we are playing at home and want to get all three points.”

Pellegrino Matarazzo: “It feels like an unnecessary defeat. My team played a decent game and didn’t allow the opposition many chances. We did not take advantage of our opportunities and were not effective enough in set-piece situations. It’s a bitter pill to swallow.”

Niko Kovac (head coach of VfL Wolfsburg): “We were lucky to win. Hoffenheim did very well and didn’t give us a lot of space, which prevented us from playing the way we wanted to. That’s why we tried longer balls. Hoffenheim could have gotten more out of the game. We are happy to have won the game.”
