Freiburg-born defender Kenneth Schmidt was drafted into the first-team squad during the winter break and made his first appearance in the Europa League round of 16 game against Juventus. The defender played in each of the last three Bundesliga games of last season, featuring five times in the top flight overall.
The 21-year-old joined Freiburg’s academy in 2017 from FC Emmendingen. He made his debut for the U23s in 2020 and has gone on to play 55 times in the Regionalliga and the 3. Liga. Schmidt is also a current Germany U21s international.
“Kenneth has quickly settled in since becoming part of the first team. He showed his bravery, tough-tackling nature and pace in his first few appearances. Thanks to his left foot and versatility, he’s become a real option for our defence,” said sporting director Klemens Hartenbach. “Kenneth Schmidt is another player in our squad from the academy and that makes us really proud.”
Kenneth Schmidt commented: “The past six months have gone really quickly for me. I want to keep on going and I’m delighted that I can continue my development here at my club in my home city. I will give my absolute best here.”
The contract details will remain undisclosed.
