Well this just happened. According to Bild, which may as well be official, Bayern Munich have sacked Julian Nagelsmann with immediate effect. He will not be in charge when the team take on Borussia Dortmund after the international break. Thomas Tuchel is the favorite to replace him.

Things are happening so quickly we don’t even know where to look. @iMiaSanMia has all the details right now.

First reported by Fabrizio Romano about half an hour ago, this news has caught the entire fanbase by surprise. There were no indications of friction behind the scenes, nothing suggesting Nagelsmann was on his way out. Now he’s gone. Thomas Tuchel is already in talks to become the new Bayern coach, per kicker. This was all in Fabrizio’s initial report and is being corroborated by news media across Germany.

The question now is WHY. Why did this happen now? If Bayern had lost to PSG, then maybe it would’ve made sense. Sacking Nagelsmann now just seems so strange. Maybe something serious happened behind the scenes. We just don’t know yet. We’ll keep you updated as we find out more.

Update #1

Fabrizio Romano gives us more on the Tuchel news. Done deal and the signing will take place soon. He’ll be in charge for the crucial games versus Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City.

Update #2

Apparently, both players and staff knew nothing about this decision. It caught them completely off guard, per the extremely reliable Kerry Hau.

Bild also has a story about why the sacking happened. Here is an article discussing it.

Update #3

Apparently Nagelsmann still hasn’t been officially told about the sacking. This is honestly such a horrible thing for Bayern to treat him this way. Whatever you think about his coaching, he didn’t deserve this.

Final update

It’s official now. Bayern Munich have parted ways with Julian Nagelsmann. Here is the official announcement.

From the press release:

Along with Nagelsmann, assistant coaches Dino Toppmöller, Benjamin Glück and Xaver Zembrod have also been released.

Oliver Kahn: “When we signed Julian Nagelsmann for FC Bayern in the summer of 2021, we were convinced we would work with him on a long-term basis – and that was the goal of all of us right up to the end. Julian shares our aspiration to play successful and attractive football. But now we have come to the conclusion that the quality in our squad – despite the Bundesliga title last year – has come to the fore less and less often. After the World Cup we have played less successfully and less attractively. The big fluctuations in performance have cast doubt on our goals for this season, but also our goals for the future. That is why we have acted now. Personally and on behalf of FC Bayern, I would like to thank Julian and his coaching team, and wish everyone the best of luck for the future.”

Hasan Salihamidžić: “This has been the most difficult decision in my time as board member for sport at Bayern Munich. I have had an open, trusting, friendly relationship with Julian from day one. I regret the parting of the ways with Julian. But after a thorough analysis of the sporting development of our team, especially since January and with the experience of the second half of the previous season, we have now decided to release him. I am very grateful to Julian for what he has done for FC Bayern and I wish him all the best.”
