The Borussia Dortmund women’s handballers will play their final game of the season on Saturday (19:00 CET). One point is needed in order to be sure that they will be represented on the international stage once again. Coach Henk Groener can count on almost the entire playing staff and the support of the fans. Pre-sales indicate that Halle Wellinghofen will be well-attended.
“We want finish off by offering the spectators another great performance, thanking them and of course winning the game,” said BVB coach Groener. “It has been a very intense and exhausting season for everyone, but also a very successful one,” he added. They are still one point short of securing third place in the Bundesliga. Even a defeat might suffice, however.
This is due to their significantly better goal difference compared to the two challengers. In addition, HSG Blomberg-Lippe (+51) and VfL Oldenburg (+17), who are both two points behind Borussia, will go head-to-head on the final matchday. The Black & Yellows have a +102 goal difference but want to play it safe. “It will be a case of bidding farewell in a fitting manner, everyone deserves that,” Groener stressed.
The topic of farewells has already been on the agenda prior to throw-off. “It will be very emotional, especially for Alina Grijseels and Yara ten Holte,” said Groener. “They have been here for a very long time and have always led the way when it comes to commitment and passion. They always go full-throttle. There will be tears in our hearts, but certainly laughter too.” Madita Kohorst, Sophie Moth, Sara Garovic, Zoe Stens and athletics coach Tobias Vogt will also bid farewell.
Garovic will not have a chance to say farewell on the court. She already missed the game away to Thüringer HC with an injury and will also miss out against Leverkusen. Lisa Antl is not at 100% but will still feature, according to Groener.
Several tickets are still available via the Online Ticket Shop, while the match can be watched free-of-charge via Sportdeutschland.TV. All other information on the match, which will get under way at 19:00 CET, will be available in the Digital Programme.
