“We want to add to the opening day victory over Leverkusen,” Mike Tullberg had announced before kick-off. And his charges turned the coach’s words into reality. They performed strongly against the promoted side from Aachen, who had started off the season with a surprise 3-2 win over Bochum.

Two completely different halves

With Charles Herrmann suspended for his sending-off, Tullberg made one changes to the winning line-up from Leverkusen: Vincenzo Onofrietti came into the midfield, with Danylo Krevsun deployed on the left flank. Tullberg himself had to watch from the sinbin following his own dismissal, with his assistant coaches Daniel Rios and Patrick Fritsch issuing the instructions in the coaching zone.

With the team delivering a focused performance from the beginning, it proved to be a relatively quiet afternoon of football at the Youth Performance Centre. BVB persistently put the visitors under pressure and forced them into mistakes. Danylo Krevsun fired Borussia into an early lead with a shot from 18 metres (3).

The Black & Yellows went about their defensive work with consistency and conjured up some fine passages of play on the pitch. The goal that made it 2-0, which saw Paris Brunner skillfully lob the Aachen shot-stopper from 30 metres, was spectacular (13), while Kjell Wätjen’s goal for 3-0 in the 53rd minute was carved out in mesmerising fashion. Rafael Lubach made it 4-0 (59), Raul König scored for 5-0 (78) and Marlon Ubani rounded off the scoring in the 90th minute.

Tullberg was not entirely satisfied, however. “We always want the maximum; with that in mind, I thought we were too passive in the first half, we showed little intensity in our play. That was much better after Daniel Rios’ half-time team talk. This match gives me a good feeling.” When he was allowed back into the dressing room half an hour after the final whistle, he had another reason to be happy: the team presented him with a gift to mark the birth of his daughter Martha. “That brought a few tears to my eyes,” Tullberg admitted.

The Black & Yellows will travel away to Wuppertaler SV on Wednesday (kick-off 18:30 CET), with the next home game taking place against Viktoria Köln next Sunday (11:00 CET kick-off at the Youth Performance Centre).

Diego Ngambia Dzonga bags a hat-trick

In Essen, the U17s celebrated their first win of the season at the third attempt: Marco Lehmann’s team deservedly beat their hosts, who had started the season with a victory and a draw, by a 3-1 scoreline. The Man of the Match was Diego Ngambia Dzonga, who capped off his strong performance with a hat-trick.

“From a footballing perspective, that was our best performance of the season in the first half,” praised Marco Lehmann. His team moved the ball about via several players, defended courageously and dominated the opposition. He had changed his starting line-up in several positions compared to the 3-3 draw in Paderborn – in part to set new stimuli and fuel the competition for places. Leon Herdes replaced Aaron Held between the sticks while Tyler Meiser, who is part of the U19 squad, strengthened the central defence alongside Elias Benkara. Justin Hoy, Mussa Kaba and Julian Driedger from the young year group also came into the team. “They went about their business really well,” lauded Lehmann.

Ngambi opened the scoring in the 15th minute following Valon Cena’s assist, made it 2-0 from the spot in the 34th minute and put the icing on the cake shortly before the break when he finished off the most beautiful move of the game to make it 3-0 (45). Lehmann reflected: “The boys pressed high, won the ball back and were rewarded for this courageous approach.”

After the break and an individual error, which led to a penalty kick and Essen pulling a goal back, the Black & Yellows initially lost their way. They needed to come through some tricky situations but regained control of the game in the final 20 minutes and comfortably saw out the 3-1 scoreline in the end. “This game gives us a great deal of self-belief and allows us to look ahead with confidence,” Lehmann explained.

The U17s will host promoted RW Oberhausen in their second home game of the season on Wednesday (23 August).
