Borussia’s youth teams kept up their successful runs: the U19s triumphed 4-0 at Wuppertaler SV in the A-Junior Bundesliga West and made it three wins from three games this season, while the U17s won their rescheduled match with Rot-Weiß Oberhausen 2-1.
The Player of the Match in Wuppertal was Paris Brunner, who not only scored three goals but constantly kept the opposing defence on their toes too. That was a great performance from Paris, in terms of running too,” lauded coach Mike Tullberg, who was taken with his team’s display and was full of praise after the final whistle. “That was our best performance of the season to date, particularly our play off the ball.”
Credit was also due to their physically robust opponents, who constantly kept the Black & Yellows busy with their long balls and offered great resistance. But BVB held firm, would not let themselves be intimidated and conjured up several lovely moves on the pitch.
The floodgates were opened by Charles Herrmann, who lined up alongside Brunner in attack and made it 1-0 after three minutes. Paris Brunner then made it 2-0 before the break and upped the score to 3-0 in the 52nd minute. The striker then converted a penalty for a foul on Kjell Wätjen to make it 4-0 in the 67th minute. He left the pitch a short while later to a round of applause.
BVB thus successfully defended pole position in the table and are next up against Viktoria Köln at the Youth Performance Centre on Sunday (11:00 CET). The Cathedral City club, who had previously won 4-3 against Wuppertal, drew 1-1 with Arminia Bielefeld.
U19s: Zacharias – Korzynietz, Mane, Posadas, Kabar – Lubach, Onofrietti (Wätjen, 58), Campbell (Diallo, 75), Krevsun (König, 82) – Herrmann, Brunner (Ubani, 75)
Ngambia turns 1-0 deficit around
The heavily weakened and new-look U17s struggled in the first period of this B-Junior Bundesliga West match but came back from 1-0 down at the break against Oberhausen. “A fully deserved victory in the end,” explained coach Marco Lehmann, who added: “In the second half, we showed a very different mentality on the pitch, significantly more tempo and aggressiveness. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the team’s morale.”
Following a good start by captain Jonas Feddersen and his team-mates, Oberhausen took the lead with their first glimpse of goal. To everyone’s surprise, Adrijan Pesa fired a free-kick into the net from deep. “We became increasingly wild after that,” explained Lehmann.
He implemented some personnel and tactical corrections at the break. With success: Diego Ngambi Dzonga, who had bagged a hat-trick in the 3-1 win in Essen and moved into the centre of attack, levelled the scores at 1-1 following a Fritz Fleck assist in the 54th minute and completed the 2-1 win in the 65th minute. The Black & Yellows subsequently squandered several chances to increase their margin of victory and gave themselves a scare in the closing stages. “That was unnecessary but the three points are what’s important,” Marco Lehmann said.
The U17s will host the reigning German B-Junior champions Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday (11:00 CET).
U17s: Herdes – Cena, Riedl (Nwofor, 46), Meiser, Blaszczyk – Degener (Svitek, 83), Ucar (Cherny, 46) – Fleck (Markötter, 81), Feddersen – Hoy (Schwarz, 46), Ngambia
