Borussia’s U19s beat the men’s team of Oberliga club SG Finnentrop/Bamenohl 4-0 in what was a successful final rehearsal ahead of the start to the Bundesliga season. “We’ll go into the final week of training with a good feeling and are looking forward to the first competitive match in Leverkusen,” summarised head coach Mike Tullberg.
After six weeks of pre-season, he had wanted to see progress – from the team and from each individual player. And the boys lived up to his demands. They functioned as a team – on and off the ball – and each player showed that he has improved individually too. “That’s training and development,” declared Tullberg, whose charges produced a mature and adult performance against a strong and enthusiastic opponent. “They defended intensively, pressed at the right moment, played into space cleverly in attack and found good solutions. I really liked the way they played,” lauded the coach.
He observed further steps in the right direction compared to the friendly wins against Wolfsburg (5-1) and FC Nordsjaelland (5-4), and also seems very close to settling on a starting line-up. Marlon Zacharias has cemented his role as the No. 1, while the four-man rearguard of Jaden Korzynietz, Filippo Mane, former Hamburg player Leonardo Posadas and Almugera Kabar is looking increasingly in tune. Rafael Lubach and Kjaell Wätjen are first-choice in midfield, as is Paris Brunner at centre-forward. Ousmane Diallo, who demonstrated his outstanding qualities following his substitution, Cole Campbell, Charles Herrmann, Danylo Krevsun, Vincenzo Onofrietti and William Rashidi are vying for the remaining places.
After switching sides intelligently, BVB opened the scoring at 1-0 through Cole Campbell in the 30th minute against an ambitious opponent from the Sauerland. Paris Brunner extended the advantage to 2-0 courtesy of some excellent link-up play directly after the restart, before Kjell Wätjen got his reward for a committed display by making it 3-0 (86) and Ousmane Diallo, who had made his comeback from a long injury lay-off as a substitute for the U17s the day before, crowned a strong cameo appearance by rounding off the scoring at 4-0.
This Sunday will see BVB kick off the final season of the A-Junior Bundesliga West as defending champions away to Bayer Leverkusen (kick-off at 13:00 CET at Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion). The opposition, who are among the top favourites this season, celebrated a successful result in their final friendly fixture and ran out 3-0 victors against PSV Eindhoven.
U19s: Zacharias – Korzynietz, Mane (Meiser, 83), Posadas, Kabar (Rashidi, 63) –Lubach, Wätjen – Herrmann (Onofrietti, 46), Krevsun (Diallo, 73), Campbell (Ubani, 78) – Brunner (König, 75)
