A delegation of Borussia Dortmund players and officials took part in a special project in the USA in June. During their stay in San Diego on the US tour, Mats Hummels, Marco Reus & Co. painted small ceramic butterflies at the San Diego Jewish Academy. Objects with a symbolic character that have now found their way from the west coast of the USA to Dortmund.
The San Diego Jewish Academy’s “Butterfly Project” is intended to be a “call to action through education, art and memorial work”. By painting ceramic butterflies, which are exhibited as symbols of resilience and hope, the participants are commemorating the 1.5 million children who were killed during the Holocaust.
The BVB representatives teamed up with some of the students to paint 36 of these butterflies themselves, 18 of which have found a home at the Jewish Academy in San Diego. The other 18 were taken back to Dortmund. With the promise that they would be given a worthy place at the club.
Since this week, the small works of art have been hanging in a prominent location at the BVB Youth Performance Centre in Dortmund-Brackel – the place where young Black & Yellow players are taught the values of Borussia Dortmund – in order to keep memories alive in a lasting and effective way.
