At the press conference after the game at Eintracht Frankfurt, Edin Terzic spoke not only about the reasons for the high-scoring draw but also issued an update on the injured players and cast a glance ahead to the match in the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday.
Edin Terzic on the 3-3 draw in Frankfurt:
“I have very mixed feelings today. We saw a wild match with an extremely high number of scoring chances. We can play football better and yet we showed that it’s not so easy to beat us, even when we’re 2-0 down. We came back twice.”
…on the problems in the first half down the left side of defence:
“We repeatedly allowed breakthroughs there in the first half. We didn’t press as a unit, which kept resulting in open spaces in behind. In addition, we lost important challenges and as a result did not manage to defend the halfway line and keep the attacks far from our goal. We’ve done that significantly better in recent games. We therefore switched up the system at half-time and brought on two fresh players. It was then considerably better in possession of the ball. Nonetheless, we saw Frankfurt’s counter-attacking strength far too often.”
…on the controversial penalty incidents:
“I don’t speak much about refereeing decisions. There are decisions that I would have made differently, but that doesn’t mean that there would have then been fewer penalties. There were enough things that we got wrong.”
…on the injured players:
“Gregor Kobel got Nico Schlotterbeck’s elbow in the face. Mats Hummels took a knock to the calf. It hit a nerve which meant that he felt it all the way down in his ankle. Emre Can was still in too much pain to be able to play today. Felix Nmecha has problems in his hip and pelvic area. He was able to battle his way through away to Newcastle. Julian Brandt and Julian Ryerson were able to train yesterday, but it was out of the question that they might be able to start today.”
…on the upcoming games:
“The initial focus is on Wednesday when we have a tough game in the cup against TSG, who are not only in good form but have won their last five away matches in the Bundesliga. An intense challenge awaits us. We’re happy that we finally have a home game in the DFB-Pokal again.” (br)
