“If you sleep through one half, you don’t deserve more than a point in the end,” said sporting director Sebastian Kehl after the 1-1 draw at VfL Bochum. Above all, he criticised the “lack of sharpness”.
Sebastian Kehl on the match and on the result:
“It was a deserved draw. Bochum were very effective in the first period and deserved the lead. We did better in the second period and deserved to equalise too. We saw that when we switched the sides quickly, the opportunities were there. But we did that too little. We have to accept the blame for that. If you sleep through one half, you don’t deserve more than a point in the end. We need to improve. Otherwise it will be difficult.”
…on the theory that the team “let it get away from them”:
“I’ve already said that we didn’t play well in the first period. We were lacking sharpness, in the challenges too. We did not compete for 50-50 balls with the necessary intensity. We knew what Bochum would do and how they would do it – and we still did not react well to it. We corrected that to some degree in the second period. The performance today was not enough. We wanted to take a step forward following the Köln game – but that was not a big step.”
…on the theory that the team has frequently struggled “against lesser opponents”:
“I don’t want to analyse other seasons. We have a different squad and different topics. We didn’t play a good game. But to talk about a fundamental problem that perhaps already existed last season: I don’t see that.”
…on the new signings and the new central midfield:
“I do not want to criticise individuals. Not everything worked out the way the coach had envisaged today. We’ve said several times that we need a few games to get going. But there were also a few rays of light today; overall though, there were not enough of them. We need to work on procedures and patterns in order to react differently against teams like today.”
